Excursions & guided tours

Come and explore the Tortin glacier and witness the changes between Tortin and Mont Fort that it has been subject to

09:15 - 16:00

Thanks to its isolated position, the summit of Mont Fort offers stunning views of the Valais Alps and the massif of Mont Blanc. Accessible by cable car, it is also a privileged vantage point from which to better understand the changes currently taking place in the high mountains, between accelerated glacier retreat and permafrost degradation.

Organized by the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur la montagne (CIRM) of the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Geomorphological Society (SSGm), this excursion explores the Tortin glacier and its past fluctuations, between Tortin and Mont Fort. The theme of permafrost, its evolution and impact on slope stability, will also be addressed

The day continues on to the Col des Gentianes, the starting point of an itinerary guided by Christophe Lambiel, geomorphologist at the University of Lausanne, specialist in permafrost and the evolution of Alpine landscapes, and President of the Swiss Geomorphological Society (SSGm).

All along the way, participants will discover the transformations of the Tortin glacier, the evolution of permafrost in the Mont Fort region.
